Alone in Africa!

3 Aug 2007

Thanks for visiting my blog and supporting KARMA YOGA PROJECT AFRICA.

As you may know, I've been working as a Peace Corp volunteer for the past year. Last month, I was hospitalized because of kidney stones and the Corp has dis-allowed me to return to my post. You can imagine my sadness, but I quickly decide to return on my own to carry on with the work I've begun.

If you are not familiar with the project, please read below or visit www.yogabodynaturals.com.

Michelle Rockwood (my sister) was stationed in The Republic of Mali during a stint in the Peace Corps. While working in a local high school, she came across a room filled with donated computers that had never been put to use.

Michelle quickly transformed this room into a computer lab complete with an overhead projector. The program was immediately successful and continues to play a vital role in the lives of the teenagers it serves.

The Republic of Mali has very little in terms of natural resource and industry to give much hope for the future. Most of Mali’s educated people move away, opting to work in Europe where job opportunities and wages are much higher.

After living in this country for the past year, Michelle has concluded that community-based education is one of the best ways to give aid. Aside from computer literacy, Michelle’s lab also creates a supportive learning environment where kids are encouraged to stay in school, pursue careers, and create a viable means of income for their families. This is especially important for the young girls who commonly leave school at a very young age.

Mali is the third poorest country in the world. The life expectancy is just 47 years making the youth population all the more important.

YOGABODY™ proudly donates 5% of all profits toward Michelle’s project which in 2008 will expand to include an internet literacy course and other education-based community programs.

This project has no administrative staff or overhead whatsoever.

100% of donations go straight to the children.

Please feel free to email Michelle directly if you’d like to get involved or make a private donation of time, money, or support projectafrica@yogabodynaturals.com.
